Do we really have guardian angels?

Well ...

Psalm 34.7 The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him, and delivers them.

And I love Hebrews 1:14: "Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation?"

It is a wonderful truth to think that, indeed, angels as ministering spirits are with us. We Evangelicals tend to think of our help as coming exclusively from the Holy Spirit -- and I think there is obvious security in taking care to not venture too far from that boundary. But then there are these angels mentioned in Hebrews 1.14 and Ps 34.7. We can't frame our theology on just some of the Word; it must be around all of it. My mind wanders to all of that Catholic stuff in Renaissance and Baroque paintings -- of angels hovering here and there and everywhere. Hmmm. Were they on to something we've more or less missed?
